I graduated in 1965 with a BA in Economics. Thanks to the brothers that voted me President of Scabbard and Blade (particularly John Harris, who nominated me) , I received a Distinguished Military Graduate award. That entitled me to pick my branch, which, like Tim, was Military Police. I credit that as a fork in the road that led me to spend the bulk of my Army career on Okinawa, instead of Vietnam.
In 1967, I went to graduate school at UCLA, where I received an MBA. Then I accepted an offer to join WED Enterprises, the design and engineering branch of Disney, to support the construction of Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. I was in Glendale, where the planning took place.
Five years later, when the park opened, Disney didn't know what to do with the young MBA's they had hired, and I eventually wound up in their tax department. Which I hated.
I then joined Collins Foods International, the parent for Sizzler Restaurants and the largest franchisee of Kentucky Fried Chicken. I was there for 12 years in various capacities before taking a CFO position for the Russ Reid Company, an advertising agency specializing in fundraising for non profits, such as World Vision, St. Jude Hospital, City of Hope, etc.
After 5 years, I took a similar position for a creative agency in Santa Monica, which lasted only a year until it imploded. Then there were the dark days of 1989-1993, where jobs in my field were non-existent. So I became a realtor. Bad timing there, too.
After finding another ad agency opening I had a 7-year gig with another direct response agency. Etc.
In 2002, I joined IHOP in the Finance Department, designing and implementing the analytics needed to support their Marketing folks. I retired in 2011.
I started Davis as a Poly Sci major, but decided that wasn't a good idea when I got a D in Poly Sci 1a. I promptly changed majors to Dramatic Arts and Speech, having fallen in love with the stage in high school.
I enjoyed drama, but that quasi-bohemian lifestyle didn't endear me to the brothers (I had pledged immediately upon entering UCD, thanks to my brother, Tim).
In the spring semester of my Sophomore year, I decided to run against Len Eisenhood for Recording Secretary. This was a ridiculous long shot, as Len was extremely popular in the House. But I made a good speech, and announced I was forsaking my wayward ways and becoming a Economics major. I also acknowledged Len's popularity, but committed to working in whatever other capacity the House deemed appropriate if I didn't get the votes.
The next day, I was studying on the Sundeck, when Greg Loewe dropped by. Greg had been one of the guys who made it clear he didn't care for me. He came to tell me he was impressed with my speech and volunteered to campaign for me. That touched me deeply.
Len won, of course, and in the Fall, I was appointed Music Chairman, which basically entailed playing a note on a pitch pipe and waving my hands as we sang songs after dinners and at pinning parties.
Greg and I became close friends. He opened the door for me at UCLA. Later, Greg contracted Hogkins Disease while in the Air Force. He received a discharge, and I was able to open the door for him at Disney. He moved on to Ramada Inns, but we kept in touch. One Friday, he told me he had to have some surgery the next day. He died on the operating table.
Rest in peace, Greg.
